Public AffairsMETRO Group maintains a continuous dialogue with the legislative bodies in politics, the economy and society. This is due on the one hand to the fact that the trade sector is perhaps the sector most affected by the social environment. There communication among customers and business partners must be trouble-free. On the other hand, the sector’s key responsibilities, for example food quality and safety, may only be achieved by trading companies, suppliers and legislative bodies working together.
METRO Group therefore works closely with international, European and domestic associations. At European level, EuroCommerce is the platform upon which the interests of the trade sector are represented and METRO Group supports a wide range of its activities. Furthermore METRO Group is the only German company with membership in the European Retail Round Table, in which major European trading companies work together to develop solutions to problems affecting the sector and seek dialogue with the EU Commission. Topics include, for example:
In Germany, for example, Group managerial staff are active in the most important trade associations, also in almost all the 80 chambers and other bodies of the Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag (
www.dihk.de) (Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce). The Group is also part of the Handelsvereinigung für Marktwirtschaft (the German retail industry’s market economy action group), an association in which the eight major German retailers work together.
On a regional level the Group has set up so-called METRO Group Regional Meetings (MGRM) (meetings regarding association policy). The aim of these meetings is to encourage employees in our sales divisions
and cross-divisional service companies
to become involved in chambers and associations. The MGRMs also coordinate the formation of opinions within the group on important political issues.
