METRO Group Buying International (MGBI), with its headquarter in Düsseldorf, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the METRO Group. As the central purchasing organization of the group, it is responsible for the entire merchandise procurement in close coordination with the sales lines. MGBI was established in 2006 as a new umbrella organization of METRO Group Buying (MGB) as a result of its internationalization strategy. It runs national and regional subsidiaries in Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Hong Kong. Whilst the regional companies pool the buying potential of several countries with comparable assortment and demand structures, the local companies of MGB take care of the specific requirements of the sales divisions of one individual country. MGB Hong Kong Limited is responsible for the worldwide procurement of direct imports of the sales lines.
Through its services and structures, MGB is able to leverage group-wide synergies and thus take account of the needs of each sales line in each respective country. On a worldwide scale, the company has a workforce of around 2,000 employees.
Buying of merchandise is an essential element of competence in wholesaling and retailing. MGB pools and controls the purchasing volumes of the METRO Group for all sales lines and thus achieves a sustainable improvement of the buying terms and conditions for the group companies – both nationally and internationally. The objective is to create a fair balance between the satisfaction of needs, which differ from country to country, the full exploitation of the procurement potential of the METRO Group, and the harmonization of procurement-relevant processes and systems.
MGB contributes to the strengthening of the METRO Group’s leading position in international competition. In doing so, it consistently adjusts itself towards the strategies and marketing concepts of the sales lines and translates them into clear supplier strategies for the purpose of increasing profitability. By utilizing all potentials inherent in the procurement processes, optimizing coordination with the sales lines and ensuring transparency of costs and benefits, MGB succeeds in enhancing the overall efficiency of the METRO Group.
With its services for the sales lines of the METRO Group, MGB strives for the best possible buying conditions. Its buyers negotiate with thousands of suppliers in order to attain the most favorable prices and conditions. At the same time the buyers are responsible for the impeccable quality of the merchandise. Freshness, high quality and reliability of the products are safeguarded by MGB through stringent inspection and testing systems for the entire supply chain. More than 140 employees worldwide ensure that the high quality standards of the company are met. These quality standards apply in particular to the private labels of the METRO Group. MGB bears responsibility for their consistent planning and marketing.
In addition, MGB is responsible for supplier and article management, it provides samples and lists of the merchandise items and supports advertising and sales promoting campaigns. The service portfolio of MGBI also includes the trend scouting and identification of new articles.
