METRO AG Agrees on Strategic Cooperation with Intel and SAP

On the occasion of the ECR Congress in Barcelona METRO AG, Intel and SAP announce a strategic cooperation whose objective it is to develop future-oriented application technologies for retailing.

Düsseldorf, 24 April 2002 – The cooperation will focus on the further development of innovative technologies for efficiency increase of the process chain in retail. Expectations are placed particularly in transponder technology that can be used in future distribution concepts for automatic product identification from the manufacturing process via transport and warehousing logistics all the way to sales.

Transponder technology is one of the major application areas of Radio Frequency Identification (RF-ID), the wireless recognition of objects. Using this technology important product information like price and best before date can be stored on computer chips attached to the product package. The information can then be automatically recalled by scanning devices. This system can be used for the stock and order management in retail companies. "As an efficient and powerful alternative to the conventional bar code concept transponder technology might give retailing the crucial impetus to improve the entire value chain, above all in the field of logistics," explains Zygmunt Mierdorf, member of the METRO AG executive board. In this way RF-ID can, for example, speed up deliveries.

METRO AG’s contribution to the cooperation is its competence as one of the leading and future-oriented retail groups. Intel, one of the leading technology firms worldwide, will make available high caliber specialists from the fields of Business Consulting, Systems Integration and hardware. Comments John Davies, Vice President of Business Solutions at Intel: "Retailers are always looking for ways to streamline their supply chain and increase the efficiency of running their business. Intel is working with market leaders like Metro and SAP to develop solutions built on open standards in support of RF-ID technologies." This cooperation brings to retailers the benefits of the most cost-effective, high performing and agile platforms today.

"We are firmly convinced that RF-ID is a technological revolution," says Wolfgang Runge, Senior Vice President Global Supply Chain Management Initiative, SAP. "In addition, this project is a good example for our vision of adaptive supply chain networks. It will be about fast and reliable alignment of information related to products, logistics and other data via the Internet or wireless networks."
