Metro Cash & Carry drives international expansion with new management structure

• Bernd Bothe leaves the company
• Thomas Hübner to become new Spokesman of the Board of Management

Düsseldorf, 1 March 2002 – Metro Cash & Carry GmbH, a member of the METRO AG group and the worldwide market leader in the self-service whole-sale trade, is gearing up for the challenges of intensified international expan-sion with a new management team. Bernd Bothe, Chairman and Chief Execu-tive Officer of the Board of Metro Cash & Carry GmbH, will leave the company in amicable agreement. He will persue other professional challenges.

Thomas M. Hübner, 43, will take over as the new Spokesman of the Board of Management of Metro Cash & Carry GmbH. Hübner, so far in charge of the business of the division in Eastern Europe in his capacity as Chief Operating Officer (COO) Eastern Europe, will promote the further international expansion of the wholesale stores with increased vigor. He will be succeeded as COO Eastern Europe by Frans Muller, so far Country Manager Makro in the Nether-lands. A new appointment to the management board of Metro Cash & Carry will be Jürgen J. Maas who has so far been on the Board of Management of Metro MGE Einkauf GmbH, the Metro Group’s own purchasing company. In the future his brief will be to further develop the international purchasing activities of Metro Cash & Carry that will be of major strategic importance since they will unlock additional synergy effects in procurement at the international level. Dr. Christian Mielsch will join the Metro Cash & Carry management as Head of Administration. So far he has been with Metro Cash & Carry Germany in the same capacity. Michael Huetten, so far CFO of Metro Cash & Carry, and Jacoba Herweijer, so far member of the Board of Management of Metro Cash & Carry, will also leave the company in amicable agreement to persue new occupations.

With these new appointments the international focus of the management of the worldwide Metro Cash & Carry business will be further strengthened. After the successful integration of the European Metro/Makro Cash & Carry busi-ness the company will now consistently expand at the international level. Metro Cash & Carry GmbH is the management company for the international Cash & Carry activities. The company is represented worldwide in 22 coun-tries with 384 wholesale outlets. In the year 2000 it generated sales in excess of 21 billion € - more than 75 per cent of which abroad.
