Metro Cash & Carry GmbH to Open First Major Store in Croatia

Zagreb, December 5, 2001 - Metro Cash & Carry GmbH, Düsseldorf, a division of the international Metro Group, will open its first store in Zagreb on December 6, 2001 after only a little more than four months of construction time thus completing its market entry into Croatia. The plan is for a store network of a total of five Metro Cash & Carry outlets to be created in Croatia in the next few years.

"Our market entry in Croatia is another step ahead in the process of internationalizing the group", stressed Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, CEO of METRO AG, on the occasion of the opening celebration in Zagreb. "After the launch of Metro Cash & Carry in Moscow we are entering the second new country in this year within the space of only a few weeks. We now operate in 24 countries world-wide."

On a selling space of some 10,000 square meters the Zagreb store will offer a broad range of 17,000 items in the Food and Nonfood segments. Total capital expenditure for the new store amounted to some € 20 million. Especially the working population will benefit from the newly established store: A total of 350 people will be employed in the store and at the headquarters of Metro Cash & Carry Croatia. In the course of the planned expansion in the next few years Metro will create more than 1,000 additional jobs in Croatia. Almost all new jobs – including those in the management of the stores – will be filled by local staff.

Metro Cash & Carry, the largest division within METRO AG with a share of 45 per cent of total group sales, offers its comprehensive, high quality product as-sortment to professional customers, especially from retailing and catering, as well as largescale institutions like for example canteens and hospitals. These are the target groups that Metro Cash & Carry also wants to tap in Croatia.
