METRO AG brings Cash & Carry ECO Concept to Spain At the beginning of July 2000 Metro/Makro Cash & Carry, METRO AG’s largest and most international business unit, opened the first ECO store in Spain.

The new outlet, that has a sales area of 3,300 m², is located near Benidorm on the Costa de Blanca, a first-class tourist area with hundreds of hotels, restaurants, bars, supermarkets and traditional food stores. Caterers and food retailers will find over 10,000 items in food and nonfood among which the professional clients will be able to find the best international products, as well as common products for this region. The ECO store concept, which was originally developed by Metro Cash & Carry France, focuses on the food offer, providing an extensive assortment of fresh products including produce, meat, fresh fish and an excellent wine cellar. Food comprises approximately 90% of the offer. In addition, a targeted range of nonfood products for business needs is included in the offer. The store incorporates the most advanced systems, such as portable scanners and invoices with itemized VAT. The Eco concept, on selling space of 3,000 – 5,000 m², enables Cash & Carry to further penetrate the European mature markets with a smaller and more targeted type of Cash & Carry store. In addition to further openings in France and Spain, METRO AG foresees potential for the ECO concept in additional European countries, including Italy, Greece, Portugal and Belgium. In addition to like-for-like sales growth and extending market penetration via modularized Cash & Carry concepts like ECO, METRO AG Cash & Carry will also grow by entering 1-2 new countries per year. Metro Cash & Carry will begin operations in Slovakia in the second half of 2000. METRO AG schedules 38 Cash & Carry openings for the current year. At the end of March 2000, Metro Cash & Carry was represented in 19 countries with a total of 341 outlets and a foreign sales proportion of approximately 75%. Metro/Makro Cash & Carry is the largest operator of its kind in the world.
