Metro Cash&Carry launches metro24.de on the Internet
Metro Cash&Carry Germany is augmenting its store-based business by launching metro24 on the Internet.
Since 3 July 2000, Metro Cash&Carry has enabled its professional customers to shop through the Internet at www.metro24.de.
In the initial phase, the assortment comprises office, organization and technology products. metro24 offers roughly 2,500 products, thereby covering almost 95% of the store-based assortment offer. Other assortments will be added shortly so that professional customers can purchase an extensive amount of their business supplies through the Internet.
Capital expenses for the internet office supply shop amounted to roughly DM 2 million. Break-even is expected to be reached by 2003. With the extention of its store-based business, Metro Cash&Carry plans not only to utilize existing customer relationships more intensively, but also to acquire new customers. New professional customers can easily register themselves via the Internet.
For orders submitted by 12:00 noon, delivery within Germany will usually take place on the following working day. The goods will be commissioned in a central warehouse and delivered by a parcel service to the customer. For orders with a net value below DM 200, a delivery fee of DM 4.30 net will be charged.
METRO AG introduced its e-commerce strategy with the B2C, B2B and e-venturing business units in May 2000. Within this context the METRO AG homepage was relaunched, and now offers target-group-specific information about the company as well as additional features. At this year's general meeting on 4 July 2000, the speech of Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, CEO of METRO AG, will be broadcast live on the Internet. The transmission will begin at approximately 11:00 a.m.
