Sales Report 1999 Result from ordinary operations rises to DM 1.35 bn

n fiscal year 1999(1 January – 31 December 1999), METRO AG achieved consolidated Group net sales of DM 85.65 bn (1998: DM 91.70 bn). This corresponds to a decline of 6.6%. Adjusted for company acquisitions and sales, Group sales rose by 5.3% in 1999.Within the scope of the Group’s concentration on their core businesses, the company Mercatone/Italy was sold and deconsolidated in December 1999, retroactive to 1 January 1999. The nonfood specialty store operator, Mercatone, achieved sales of DM 851 million in fiscal year 1999.In Q4 (1 October – 31 December 1999), METRO AG Group achieved consolidated net sales of DM 25.74 bn. This corresponds to a decline of 4.7%. Adjusted, an increase of 6.4% was achieved.With a view to like-for-like sales, the Christmas and Millennium business was in line with expectations. In Europe, Cash & Carry achieved positive sales growth, whereby in particular sales in Germany were above expectations. Food Retail sales also profited from the holiday business. Sales at Nonfood Specialty varied. While sales at the home improvement centers, where the holiday business customarily has less significance, nearly reached the level of the previous year, sales in the consumer electronics centers both in Germany and in European foreign markets again showed a marked increase, despite the high level of the previous year. At Department Stores, sales remained at the level of the previous year.
