Metro Group seeks young talent

Second "Meeting Metro", an info event for students

The info event "Meeting Metro" for students will be held in the Duisburg-North Landscape Park on 24 October 2002. The intention of this event by the METRO AG (Düsseldorf), one of the world's leading trading and retailing companies, is to generate enthusiasm for the retail trade among young people. Following the success of the kick-off event in January this year, this is now the second time that the Metro Group is drawing attention to itself as an attractive employer in this way.

The Group will be presenting itself in an exhibition space of 2,500 square metres at the “Kraftzentrale” in the Duisburg Landscape Park, featuring the sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt and Saturn, Praktiker and Kaufhof. The meeting in this unusual setting will give visitors a chance to get a first-hand impression of the Metro Group as an attractive employer, with a wide range of fields of activity, and excellent promotion opportunities for graduate entrants. "The Metro Group is looking for well qualified recruits for its international expansion," explains Zygmunt Mierdorf, a Member of the Management Board and Director of Industrial Relations of the METRO AG. "In the next few years, we will continue to look for a lot of highly motivated young people – each year we will need several thousand new recruits, including at least 300 university graduates".

Participants at "Meeting Metro" can expect to learn about a fascinating Group with modern concepts and a clear corporate strategy. They can find out at first hand in discussions with Metro staff why the trading and retailing business is so exciting, particularly for career starters, and how a career in this industry can develop. Katja Litsche, who was one of the participants at the first "Meeting Metro", and is now working as a trainee at the Metro sales division Kaufhof, put it like this: "I have always wanted to work in retailing. 'Meeting Metro' gave me the ideal opportunity to find out about the company and to establish personal contact." The students can look forward to an unusual corporate presentation at the start of the event. And then there is a "Boulevard" set up specially for this event, serving as a meeting point, information and contact clearing house. This is also the setting for a presentation giving a clear overview of the companies within the Group. The event will end with a party featuring live music in the evening, finishing at around midnight.

The METRO AG is one of the world's largest trading and retailing groups. It earned revenues of €49.5 billion in 2001. It includes the sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt and Saturn, Praktiker and Kaufhof. The total workforce of the Group in 2001 was more than 230,000 people, and it currently operates in 25 countries.
