METRO Group Integrates Imports into Procurement Company MGB (Metro Group Buying)

New structure of procurement within the group takes account of EU markets growing together

METRO AG, Duesseldorf, will adjust the organizational structure of its group-wide procurement function to the changing conditions in the European economic region. Effective 01 January 2004 Metro MGE Einkauf GmbH in Duesseldorf, operating under the new name MGB (Metro Group Buying) will coordinate all procurement activities for the METRO Group. MGE has already been in charge of controlling procurement activities for the group. In addition, it will in future organize imports from Asia and non-EU countries. The Metro import company Gemex Trading AG will continue to perform its present tasks until 31 December 2003. After that date it will be integrated into MGB.

The major reason for this restructuring operation is the growing together of the markets in the EU countries. Within Europe the procurement of merchandise is no longer handled as an import transaction but as domestic trade. The imports of the Metro sales divisions from Asia and the non-EU countries will be coordinated by MGB out of Hong Kong. The Gemex locations in Switzerland, Italy and Greece will be closed with effect from 31 December 2003.
