Media Markt Launched in Belgium – First Store Opened in Antwerp

The Media-Saturn-Holding Company, Ingolstadt, is continuing its international expansion. After opening its first Media Markt store in Belgium the subsidiary of the internationally active METRO Group is now represented in a total of ten countries.

"We will continue to move into new markets as well as further expand our successful businesses in existing countries," commented Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, CEO of the METRO Group.

The store in Antwerp’s Century Center employs 95 staff and has a selling space of 4,500 square meters. The assortment of about 120,000 items offers a comprehensive range of consumer electronics, electrical household appliances, sound carriers, New Media, office and telecommunications equipment, computers, hardware, software, photographic equipment and accessories.

With their permanently low prices, an extensive network of specialist outlets and a uniquely wide assortment in the industry the Media Markt and Saturn consumer electronics centers have gained market leadership in Europe. The electronic specialist has more than 384 stores worldwide, 135 of which are located outside Germany. In addition to Belgium Media Markt / Saturn is also represented in France, Italy, The Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Spain and Hungary.

Due to their good positioning the Media Markt and Saturn outlet chains have been able in the last few months to operate successfully against a weak industry trend gaining further market shares. In the first nine months of this year total sales of this Metro subsidiary climbed by 15.2 percent to € 6.3 billion. In the same period the EBITDA went up by 14.4 percent to € 208.5 million.
