METRO Group Decides on Launch of Independent Deposit System Effective 1 January 2003

After all the attempts to introduce a nationally uniform deposit ruling have failed the METRO Group will launch in its German stores an independent deposit system for non-returnable beverage containers with effect from 1 January 2003.

The METRO Group will do everything it can to reduce to an absolute minimum the difficulties that the deposit system may cause to customers. The stores of the sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra and Kaufhof will show the deposit to be paid separately on the cash register ticket. On presentation of the ticket the deposit will be refunded when the empties are returned. The METRO Group will commission an independent third party service provider to manage the disposal of the empty containers.

The mandatory deposit imposed by the legislator with effect from 1 January 2003 must be paid on the following non-returnable packaging materials: glass, plastics (PET), aluminum and tin sheet. The ruling applies to the beverages of beer, mineral water and carbonated soft drinks. The deposit amounts to 25 Cents for containers up to 1.5 liters and 50 Cents for containers of more than 1.5 liters.
