METRO Group to invest € 100 million at its Düsseldorf location

Erection of two office complexes and one Extra convenience store; Extension and modernization of the Metro Cash & Carry store in Düsseldorf

METRO Group is launching extensive construction works on the group’s premises in Düsseldorf. The international trading and retailing group is investing around € 100 million into the erection of two new office complexes as well as the extension and modernization of the existing Metro Cash & Carry store.

"The rapid international growth of our group is also having an effect on the Düsseldorf location," explained Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, Chairman and CEO of METRO AG, at the ground-breaking ceremony. "We need more space, especially for the employees of our purchasing company, METRO Group Buying." In addition, an Extra convenience store is to be opened on the premises of the group’s headquarters. After completion of these construction works, METRO Group is planning to establish a Media Markt outlet on its premises.

"We, the people of Düsseldorf, are proud that a company so successful on the international market is managing its expansion from this city," said the Mayor of Düsseldorf Joachim Erwin. "With the erection project, started today, METRO Group will not only create space for numerous new employees, but also a highly impressive connection to Grafenberger Allee."

The demolition of the old administrative buildings along Schlüterstraße has already begun. In the first phase of construction, they will be replaced by a long building complex with an office area of 25,000 square meters and 12,000 square meters of inspection rooms. These rooms will serve the vendors as exhibition space. Here, new products will be presented to the employees of Metro’s purchasing company (MGB METRO Group Buying GmbH). On the ground floor of this building METRO Group will open its third Extra convenience store in Düsseldorf with a sales area of 1,800 square meters. Additional service shops, such as a hairdresser, laundry or shoemaker, will be established around the Extra store. The new building complex will be rounded off by a ten-story rectangular tower building at the corner of Grafenberger Allee.

In addition to the erection of the office building at Schlüterstraße, METRO Group is planning to modernize and expand the existing Metro Cash & Carry store. The market is to be fundamentally rebuilt by 2004. The concept is also aimed at an enlargement of the product range. The new market will additionally receive a bakery shop offering fresh-baked bread and rolls. Other innovations will include: an accessible humidor with over 600 different tobacco products from all over the world, an enlarged wine department as well as an extended drugstore section.
