METRO Group expands into Ukraine19.08.2003
Düsseldorf / Kiev, 19 August 2003 – METRO Group opened its first Metro Cash & Carry wholesale store in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. The international trading group is now represented in 27 countries – the Metro Cash & Carry wholesale division alone being represented in 25 countries.
"The internationalization of the METRO Group is progressing swiftly. We are the first major international trading company which is operating in Ukraine," explained Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, Chairman and CEO of METRO Group, in Kiev. "With 48.5 million inhabitants and a continuously rising purchasing power, Ukraine holds an enormous market potential for METRO Group. I am convinced that the internationally successful Metro Cash & Carry concept will also be quickly accepted by the professional customers in Ukraine."
The Kiev Metro Cash & Carry wholesale store targets professional customers from restaurants and commercial businesses as well as institutional consumers. It features approx. 10,000 square meters of selling space and was completed in less than six months. The product range comprises more than 20,000 articles. The concentration on local suppliers which is typical for Metro Cash & Carry worldwide is also pursued in Ukraine. Around 90 percent of the goods on display in Kiev originate from Ukrainian producers and distributors.
The capital investment in the first Ukrainian Metro Cash & Carry market amounts to around Euro 15m. In the medium-term, a national network of seven wholesale stores is planned.
In October 2003, METRO Group will continue the internationalization of its business activities and open its first Metro Cash and Carry store in India.
