METRO Group launches Cash & Carry operations in India20.10.2003
METRO Group today announced the opening of its first Metro Cash & Carry Distribution Centre in Bangalore, India. With this entry, the international trading group is now represented in 28 countries. The METRO Group is strategically focussing on Europe and Asia to further enhance its international expansion.
"After three years of careful preparation we are confident that our Cash & Carry concept will prove as successful in the Indian market as it has been in all other countries," said Dr. Hans-Joachim Koerber, Chief Executive Officer of METRO Group, in Bangalore. “India today can boast of a fast growing economy with fast rising customer standards. That coupled with the largest business-to-business environment provides a successful business opportunity for Metro Cash & Carry."
The Metro Cash & Carry merchandising concept with its high-quality goods assortment, exclusively targets business customers like small and medium sized retailers, restaurants as well as other businesses.
“These distribution centres will bring together producers, farmers, agricultural cooperatives and manufacturers with the community of traders, retailers and small to medium business enterprises under one roof. Internationally, this model has proved beneficial to small and medium sized retailers who are able to source high quality products from a one stop location in the quantities they need at the time they require. By establishing a modern supply chain we also ensure that they are able to get their merchandise at the best prices possible, thereby making them more competitive in their market place", Koerber added.
Metro is one of the largest distributors of food products world-wide. Once a Metro operation commences, Metro companies worldwide start sourcing products from local suppliers for international markets. The group already has a company established in India for this purpose six years ago.
The first distribution centre opened in Bangalore offers a selling space of 6,500 square metres and was built together with local companies in a construction time of 6 months. The goods assortment comprises some 17,500 articles. The world-wide concentration on domestic suppliers, that is typical of Metro Cash & Carry, will also be practised in India. About 90 percent of the goods offered originate from local producers and suppliers.
Next month the group will open the second Metro Cash & Carry distribution centre in Bangalore. The capital expenditure for establishing the first two distribution centres and headquarters in India totals about Rs. 176 Cr. (€ 35 million). Each of the two distribution centres in Bangalore will employ around 300 local people. Including headquarters Metro Cash & Carry India will employ 750 local people. A major part of these people have been prepared for their jobs thoroughly for months overseas.
