METRO Group striking a positive balance for the 2003 training year

• Number of new trainees increased by around three percent as at 30 September
• Clearly more severely handicapped trainees

This year, METRO Group took on around 3,000 vocational trainees in Germany. This represents an increase of almost three percent over the previous year. "Particularly in this year it was important for us to set a positive example", said Zygmunt Mierdorf, Member of the Management Board of METRO Group. "For us, investing into the training of young people represents an investment into the future of our company".

In recent years, METRO Group has continually increased the number of openings for vocational trainees in its own company. Thus, the share of trainees rose from 5.3 percent (in 1996) to now 7.6 percent. "Today, we stand about two percent above the German average," says Mierdorf. "METRO Group is now one of the companies offering the highest number of positions for vocational trainees in Germany".

The number of trainees with acknowledged severe handicaps/entitled to equality of opportunity at METRO Group grew substantially, too, namely to 51 at the start of the 2003 training year. This represents a rise of over 30 percent compared with the prior year. With this move, METRO Group underlines its particular commitment in the field of the advancement of handicapped people. On 16 October, the company organized a one-day event focusing on this subject as one of the first major corporations in Germany: the Metro Forum 2003 held on the occasion of the "European Year of People with Disabilities".
