METRO Group introducing itself to young potentials

Third "Meeting Metro" image event promoting careers in trade and retailing

On 5 November 2003, the image event "Meeting Metro – Event 2003" for students will be held at the Océ EventCenter in Munich. With this event which is unique in Germany, the Düsseldorf-based METRO Group, one of the world’s leading group of companies in trade and retailing, wants to win young people for its line of business. Following the success of the first two Meeting Metro events held last year in North-Rhine Westphalia, the Group is now for the first time presenting itself as an attractive employer in Bavaria.

Zygmunt Mierdorf, Member of the Management Board and Executive Vice President Human Resources of METRO Group, explains: "The first two events have shown that the image of METRO Group is developing towards that of an innovative and attractive employer. To experience and actively participate in the exciting development and international expansion of METRO Group offers interesting perspectives, particularly for career starters. We recruit around 3,000 trainees every year and 200 university graduates worldwide to support us in our organic growth".

At the 3,000 square meter exhibition stand, around 600 students in economics and business management will be given an overview of the Group with its sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt and Saturn, Praktiker as well as Kaufhof. In an exceptional setting, the visitors of METRO Group will get a hands-on experience of the manifold tasks and career opportunities for university graduates. A boulevard set up specifically for this event will be used as a stage for a transparent presentation of the group companies and serves as a meeting point, information and contact clearing house. This is also the setting where the group will present itself in supermarkets built as a true copy of the originals, on bay shelves and in the colorful world of a department store. In this framework, which is unique for the retailing trade and for a DAX 30 company, METRO Group will also present its visions of the future of shopping to the audience: in the "Future Lab", the visitors will discover the technologies of the future for tomorrow’s retailing. In April, the trading and retail company had opened the first Future Store in the world in Rheinberg near Duisburg. In this converted supermarket of Metro’s Extra sales division, the latest technologies have for the first time been combined for form a complex interacting system. Under the motto "Hands-on Retailing", several of these new technologies will be presented at Meeting Metro.

One day earlier, i.e. on 4 November 2003, METRO Group introduced itself to around 600 teachers and employees of the local labor offices, the retailing associations as well as the chambers of industry and commerce in a state-approved further education event as a company that takes on trainees. The "Meeting Metro" teacher training presented the facts and provided practical information on the main fields of work in trade and retailing, both with a view to the requirements on the applicants as well as to the continuously developing tasks and career perspectives. As the largest sector of vocational training in Germany, trade and retailing takes on 100,000 new trainees every year. On an annual average, the sales divisions of METRO Group train about 8,500 young people in 20 different professions.

In discussions with the Metro staff – ranging from the trainee through to the managing director – the participants of "Meeting Metro" learn first-hand why trading and retailing is an exciting field of activity and what a career in this sector could look like. It is thus a good opportunity for obtaining information on current aspects of retailing and for establishing contacts. The students can look forward to an unusual company presentation with Arabella Kiesbauer and Ranga Yogeshwar at the start of the event. It will end with a party featuring live music in the evening and finishing at around midnight.

In 2002, METRO Group posted sales revenues of € 51.5 billion. The Group has over 240,000 employees and is now represented in 28 countries.
