METRO Group opens RFID Innovation Center in Neuss

Crucial step on the way to the rollout of the radio technology

METRO Group opened its RFID Innovation Center in Neuss. This is where the sales divisions, technology partners and suppliers of the METRO Group can familiarize themselves with the Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) in due time before the rollout scheduled to start in November 2004, and optimally prepare themselves for this move.

"The opening of the Innovation Center represents a crucial step on the way to the large-scale rollout of RFID in retailing. With the opening of this center we are fulfilling our promise to intensively support our partners in the realization of the rollout", said Zygmunt Mierdorf, management board member and CIO of the METRO Group. "The METRO Group once again underscores its role as one of the innovation drivers in retailing. Moreover, we understand our efforts as a clear commitment to Germany in its role as an important location for research and innovation."

The METRO Group will be the first retail company in the world to use RFID throughout the entire logistics process chain. The first phase of the rollout will start in November 2004 with around 20 suppliers. Later it will gradually be extended to about 100 suppliers, eight central warehouses and 269 locations of the sales divisions METRO Cash & Carry, Real and Kaufhof in Germany. Pallets and transport packages will be provided with the so-called Smart Chips.

The Innovation Center in Neuss helps the participants prepare for this crucial step in the rollout of RFID in retailing. The METRO Group partners can gather their own experience by testing the application of the new technology under real-life conditions. The focus will be on RFID readers and Smart Chips used for different merchandize categories, packaging units and applications.

On a total area of 1,300 m² at the Kaufhof warehouse in Neuss-Norf, the Innovation Center also offers the opportunity for direct contact with the METRO Group and representatives of the IT partners and consumer goods industry to discuss the opportunities and challenges of RFID. Different test areas will be available, including reproductions of one selling space each for clothing and sound carriers as well as for food products, and the simulation of the complete supply chain. In addition, the goods-in and goods-out gates of the Kaufhof warehouse will be used during the test phase.

At the Innovation Center, the METRO Group will advance the further development of the RFID technology in retailing together with its technology partners. The focus will be on the practical application of RFID at all levels of the process chain and the international standardization of the data records which will be decisive for the further implementation of this technology of the future over the next years. In cooperation with the international standardization initiative EPCglobal, METRO Group is one of the driving forces of this development.
