METRO Group launches an Internet site accessible for disabled persons08.09.2004
"As one of the first companies in Germany, METRO Group has now created a barrier-free website", explains Zygmunt Mierdorf, CIO of the METRO Group. "The new menus and functions are structured such that they can also be easily used by visually impaired people."
The new structure of the webpages follows the requirements of the ordinances issued by the Federal Ministry of the Interior on barrier-free information technology (
www.bmi.bund.de). The webpages offer a uniform, consistent structure and navigation. This is particularly important for visually impaired people who are using a special technology for reading the Internet. Thanks to the linear structure, they can use so-called screenreaders who read the contents of the pages aloud or display the information in Braille.
The same offer can be navigated via the tab keys, and the size of the characters can be modified as well. Moreover, two additional color variants can be adjusted for people who are color blind.
In general, the pages have been provided with new functions and a modern design. Substantially more information is now accessible via the start page. Navigation was simplified to allow for a fast and user-friendly browsing through the website.
