METRO Group raises the number of new vocational trainees by 5 percent

As at 1 September 2004 the METRO Group companies have taken on a total of 3,087 young people as vocational trainees.

"That is 5 percent more than last year. Over the past few years, METRO Group has continuously raised the number of positions for vocational trainees. In early September the total number of trainees stood at 8,895. During the past few years, our trainee quota has been increased continuously to now 8.1 percent in the third quarter 2004", explained Zygmunt Mierdorf, Executive Vice President Human Resources of the METRO Group. "METRO Group has thus also this year fully measured up to its responsibility to train young people and has made an important contribution to the training pact in Germany."

All companies of the METRO Group have contributed to this result. Above average increases in new positions were achieved by Praktiker (+ 45 %), Metro Cash & Carry (+ 10 %) as well as Media Markt and Saturn (+ 8%). Media Markt and Saturn alone have taken on 1,106 new trainees this year.

In addition, METRO Group this year participated in the "Jobs without barriers" project launched by the Federal Ministry of Health and enabled young people with a learning disability to complete their second training year at its sales divisions. "In cooperation with the vocational training centers of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, METRO Group thereby contributes to substantially improve the employment opportunities of these young people", said Mierdorf.

With sales of € 53.6 billion (2003) METRO Group is the world’s fourth-largest retailing company. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 in 28 countries and operates around 2,400 locations. The operating business is performed by the six sales divisions which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real SB hypermarkets, Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, Praktiker home improvement and DIY centers, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
