METRO Group demonstrates: trading sector is an attractive employer

"Meeting Metro" – Unique platform for information on job training and career

With its "Meeting Metro" event series, METRO Group is presenting itself as an attractive employer to university graduates and trainees, now for the first time in the Frankfurt conurbation, on 3 and 4 November 2004. Düsseldorf-based METRO Group, one of the worldwide leading trading and retailing groups, is offering an information and communication platform on the subject of training and career which is unique in this industry. "We want to enthuse young people with our business and demonstrate that trading is an exciting field of activity", illustrates Zygmunt Mierdorf, Member of the Management Board and Executive Vice President Human Resources at METRO Group. "In line with our continued international expansion we have great demand for motivated employees. Every year we hire several thousand people, among them 200 university graduates worldwide, and around 3,000 trainees in Germany alone".

Following the motto "Hands-on trading experience" the Metro sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt and Saturn, Praktiker as well as Galeria Kaufhof present themselves on some kind of boulevard which covers an area of 3,000 square meters. In this extraordinary ambiance visitors will experience the great variety of activities an international company like METRO Group can offer to young people. In personal interviews, Metro employees – from trainees through to managing directors – explain how a job career can be started and what prospects of promotion are available.

METRO Group is one of the largest job trainers in the German trade and retail sector. Within the scope of a state-recognized further education measure, on the first day of "Meeting Metro" the group informs around 600 teachers and employment office staff, delegates from the retail associations as well as the chambers of commerce on training opportunities in this industry. The teachers and trainers receive practical information about requirements, fields of work and career opportunities offered by the trade and retail sector to potential trainees. They can thus convey to their school graduates a realistic picture of the jobs in the phase of vocational orientation. "Despite the shortage of training jobs, it is often difficult for us to find a sufficient number of qualified trainees for a job in our industry", Mierdorf asserts. "The picture in the minds of young people of a job in our exciting trade is slowly changing, however. This development is not least the consequence of the overwhelming response to ‘Meeting Metro’ in the past years, as demonstrated by the increasing number of training job applications we receive".

The trade and retail industry as the largest training sector in Germany employs around 240,000 trainees on average per year. METRO Group alone offers training jobs for around 9,000 young people. "This year we have hired 5 percent more trainees than last year and are thus making a significant contribution to the success of the German training pact", Mierdorf explains.

On the occasion of "Meeting Metro", the internal event "Young Talents@Meeting Metro" is taking place for the first time. About 200 junior staff of METRO Group are expected to participate. The objective is to foster communication within the group and give young employees a forum for building an internal network. "With this gathering, we want to document also within our own ranks that the subject of vocational training is a topic that has high priority for us", says Mierdorf.

With sales of € 53.6 billion (2003) METRO Group is the world’s fourth-largest retailing company. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 in 28 countries and operates around 2,400 locations. The operating business is performed by the six sales divisions which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets, Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, Praktiker home improvement and DIY centers, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
