METRO Group inaugurates new headquarters in Düsseldorf

• Completion of two office buildings and one Extra supermarket plus shopping mall
• € 100 million invested at the Düsseldorf location

Following a construction time of only 18 months, METRO Group now inaugurates a new office complex on the premises of its Düsseldorf headquarters. The world’s fourth largest trade and retail group invested around € 100 million into the "Stadtkante" construction project.

"Düsseldorf is the hub of our internationally expanding company; this is the nerve center of our business", said Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, CEO of the METRO Group. "Therefore the extension of our group’s headquarters represents an important investment into the future." The new head office in addition to the new administrative buildings also boasts an Extra supermarket plus shopping mall. Düsseldorf’s first Media Markt already opened on the premises back in October. Of the 250,000 staff worldwide, a total of 4,500 employees will in future be working at the headquarters of the METRO Group.

"The people in Düsseldorf are proud of the fact that an internationally successful company like the METRO Group is controlling its expansion from this city", said the lord mayor of Düsseldorf, Joachim Erwin. "With the extension of its group headquarters the METRO Group not only created space for numerous employees but at the same time also a representative connection to Grafenberger Allee."

The apex of the group’s premises now features a new, ten-floor tower on a level with Grafenberger Allee. This is where METRO AG as the management holding of the METRO Group will reside in future. Adjacent to the tower follows a long building block with 25,000 m² of office space and 12,000 m² of exhibition space used as show rooms by the suppliers of the Metro purchasing function.

On the ground floor, METRO Group plans to open its third Extra supermarket in Düsseldorf with a selling space of 1,800 m², at 2 December. In an adjacent shopping mall, service shops like a hairdresser, dry cleaner and a shoe repair shop will round off the offer. By mid-2005, also the existing Metro Cash & Carry store is to be modernized and extended without interrupting operations.

With sales of € 53.6 billion (2003) METRO Group is the world’s fourth-largest retailing company. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 in 28 countries and operates around 2,400 locations. The operating business is performed by the six sales divisions which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets, Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, Praktiker home improvement and DIY centers, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
