METRO Group lays foundation stone for bilingual company kindergarten

With the construction of its company kindergarten, METRO Group is setting a landmark to demonstrate the compatibility of family and career.

After inaugurating its new headquarters in November 2004, today the company laid the foundation stone for a bilingual (German + English) kindergarten at the group premises. This child care center is to accommodate 65 children of between 5 months and 6 years of age. The carrier of this institution is the Red Cross, district association of Düsseldorf. The Metro kindergarten is to be inaugurated in October 2005.

"Specifically against the background of current demographic developments, the establishment of a company kindergarten is an important investment in the future", asserted Zygmunt Mierdorf, member of the Management Board of METRO Group, on the occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony. "With this institution, we want to help our employees to combine family life with career." Of its 250,000 employees worldwide, around 4,500 work at the headquarters of METRO Group in Düsseldorf. "In offering bilingual child care, we are paying tribute to the growing internationality of our company", Mierdorf said. In total, people from 30 nations are employed at METRO Group in Düsseldorf.

Metro’s company kindergarten will consist of a two-storey "children’s house" and a one-storey annex to accommodate kitchen and administration. The two buildings will be connected by a joint foyer leading to the garden which can be used as a roofed-over playground when the weather is bad. Timber and glass are the principal building materials to be used. Warm yellow and red hues are to prevail in the building both externally and internally. The children’s day care center is located in the direct neighborhood of Metro’s premises in a park-like area with a stock of old trees. There, the children can explore their environment undisturbed, with all senses.

Reporting sales revenues of € 56.4 billion (2004) METRO Group is the third-largest trading and retailing group worldwide. The company has around 250,000 employees at more than 2,400 locations in 30 countries. Its operating business is managed by six sales divisions: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – the world market leader in self-service wholesaling, Real hypermarkets, Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – the European market leader in the consumer electronics sector, Praktiker home improvement and DIY center as well as Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
