EuroShop 2005: METRO Group Future Store Initiative presents ground-breaking innovations for trade and retailing

For the first time the METRO Group and its partners will exhibit at EuroShop, Düsseldorf’s Global Retail Trade Fair, from February 19 to 23, 2005.

Ground-breaking technologies developed in the context of the METRO Group Future Store Initiative for the future of retailing will be on show. Since April 2003 these innovations have been undergoing testing and fine-tuning under real-life conditions at the METRO Group Future Store in Rheinberg, Germany.

Innovations to experience first-hand
The METRO Group will present itself and its fascinating innovations in the EuroCIS section of EuroShop 2005. The retail giant will invite visitors on an interactive journey into the future. "With the help of an entirely new didactic concept, we aim to give members of the trade a feel for the future of retailing", says Zygmunt Mierdorf, Member of the Management Board of METRO Group. Visitors to the 800-square-meter area in Hall 7a will encounter a futuristic hands-on show of innovations.

The Future Store’s developments, including innovations never before presented to the public, will be displayed in clearly defined thematic areas. The technologies can be experienced and grasped – in every sense of the word. Visitors are invited to try the exhibits for themselves. For example, guests can write a trial Electronic Shopping List, which the user sends to the Future Store via e-mail from the comfort of home. Or look into the Smart Fridge, a new-generation appliance that monitors its own contents and even reminds the user when to go shopping.

A host of highlights from the future of shopping
In addition, the METRO Group is letting visitors in on its visions for the future. These include the Smart Trolley, which automatically recognizes the products placed in its basket. A further highlight is the Intelligent Dressing Room: its monitor shows the customer garments that best complement the outfit being tried on.

"EuroShop 2005 is the ideal place to present the Future Store concept to retailers and their partners. We want to demonstrate the enormous benefits that can result from implementing new technologies in our sector", explains Zygmunt Mierdorf. The Future Store is the METRO Group’s research laboratory for the Future Store Initiative. Partners in the initiative include SAP, Intel, IBM and T-Systems along with around 50 other companies from the IT, consumer goods and service industries. Their mutual aim is to develop customer-friendly applications, while at the same time accelerating the modernization process in retailing on an international scale. Long-term plans include establishing globally applicable standards for trade and retailing.
