METRO Group opens its bilingual company kindergarten 'Metro-Sternchen'23.09.2005
"As one of the largest employers in Düsseldorf, we recognize our social responsibility. By establishing a company kindergarten we would like to do our part for a family-friendly society and help our employees achieve a balance between their family and professional lives," stresses Zygmunt Mierdorf, member of the Management Board of METRO Group. Of the 250,000 employees worldwide, around 5,500 work in Düsseldorf. The METRO Group aims to attract more highly qualified female employees and managers. A good support system for children plays an important role here. "This is an important investment in the future," says Mierdorf. The kindergarten is unique because the children will be cared for bilingually – in German and English. This allows the METRO Group to do justice to the company's increasing internationalization: In Düsseldorf alone, people from 30 different countries work for the retailing company.
The "Metro-Sternchen" consists of a two-story "children’s house," in which four groups will be cared for, and a one-story annex that accommodates the kitchen and administration. The two buildings are connected by a joint foyer which leads to the garden and which can be used as a covered play area when the weather is bad. Every last detail of the kindergarten’s architectural design is child-friendly: The use of yellow and red hues, the colorful materials and the large windows make the room very warm and friendly. The outside area of "Metro-Sternchen" offers plenty of room to play, including a tree house, a jungle gym and a "walking school" which teaches the children sensory perception. The carrier of the facility is the German Red Cross district association of Düsseldorf. The name of the company kindergarten was the outcome of an internal competition between employees: "Metro-Sternchen" was voted the most creative suggestion.
With sales of € 56.4 billion (2004) METRO Group is the world’s third largest retailing group. The company has a headcount of more than 250,000 employees and operates around 2,400 locations in 30 countries. The operating business is performed by the sales divisions which operate independently in their respective markets: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets, Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – the European market leader in consumer electronics centers, Praktiker home improvement and DIY centers, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
