METRO Group and GS1 Germany jointly establish accredited RFID Test Lab

• Sole research and test center in Europe
• Solutions can be tested and certified according to the EPCglobal standards

The METRO Group and GS1 Germany have been jointly commissioned with the operation of a test lab accredited by EPCglobal for the further development of the RFID technology. This decision was taken in the context of the Performance Test Center Accreditation Program of EPCglobal Inc. in Atlanta (USA), the international standardization organization for RFID. In addition to the RFID Test Center of METRO Group and GS1 Germany, EPCglobal also accredited three other test centers, one of them in Taiwan, two in the USA.

METRO Group and GS1 Germany will give users the opportunity to have their merchandize tagged with RFID transponders and the performance of the EPC generation 2 technologies tested. As a rule, the tests will be conducted according to standardized procedures specified by EPCglobal. In particular, the application of RFID on case and item level as well as in a complex environment involving various materials such as metals or liquids is to be prepared. This is where technical solutions and improvements will be developed.

Dr. Gerd Wolfram, Managing Director of MGI METRO Group Information Technology GmbH, said: "We are very glad about the decision by EPCglobal to commission the METRO Group and GS1 Germany with the operation of an RFID Test Lab. It is a confirmation of our successful continuous work on the development and application of RFID in the retail sector. Once again, METRO Group takes a leading role in the application of technology in our industry."

"The worldwide recognition and establishment of a Test Lab accredited by EPCglobal represents another major step for the acceptance of GS1 Germany as an RFID competence center. As the German arm of EPCglobal it is an important task for us to accompany the introduction of the corresponding standards and be available as a competence center for any technical questions relating to both the process and the consumer", Jörg Pretzel, Managing Director of von GS1 Germany, explained the commitment.

The Test Lab as the only institution of this kind in Europe will be established at the facilities of the METRO Group RFID Innovation Center in Neuss. The establishment will be completed by late October 2005. From then the center will be permanently available to all sectors/industries. This applies for users, RFID manufacturers and service providers. In line with the policy pursued so far, the platform of GS1 Germany will be used to compile the know-how gained from the cooperation, discuss it and use it as input for the standardization and further implementation on the international level.
