METRO Group with record number of vocational trainees14.11.2005
Duesseldorf, 14 November 2005 – METRO Group again stepped up its number of vocational trainees in Germany and reached a new record number. The total number of vocational trainees in Germany rose to 8,695 at the end of the third quarter 2005, which represents around 100 vocational trainees more than the same time last year. As at 1 September 2005 the companies of the METRO Group offered vocational training positions to around 3,100 young people.
The training quota rose from 8.1 percent last year to 8.4 percent in 2005. Consequently, the METRO Group fully complied with its training obligations also this year and made an important contribution to the voluntary pact on apprenticeships in Germany. All companies of the METRO Group have contributed to this result. An over-proportionate increase in new trainee positions was recorded in the wholesale division with Metro Cash & Carry and C & C Schaper (+ 11 percent) as well as at the Real hypermarkets (+ 5 percent). Media Markt and Saturn took on around 1,000 new vocational trainees this year. At 15.9 percent, the training quota of this sales division continued to rank far above the average.
The number of handicapped vocational trainees at the METRO Group was raised from 64 last year to 73 in 2005. Furthermore, METRO Group this year increased its participation in the project "Jobs ohne Barrieren" (barrier-free jobs) organized by the Federal Ministry of Health. In this context, another 41 youths with a learning disability from vocational training institutes this year completed their second training year in METRO Group companies. Under a cooperation with the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft der Berufsbildungswerke (working committee of the vocational training institutes) the METRO Group was thus able to contribute to substantially improving the employment opportunities of these young people.
METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2004 the group reached sales of € 56.4 billion. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 employees and operates around 2,400 locations in 30 countries. The performance of the METRO Group is based on the strength of its sales divisions which operated independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, Praktiker home improvement and DIY centers, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
