METRO Group CeBIT premiere exceeds all expectations15.03.2006
On an area of almost 3,000 square meters, the METRO Group showed hands-on examples of its utilization in practice, making RFID one of the highlights of this year’s CeBIT.
"Our first appearance at CeBIT has fulfilled all our expectations. In fact, it exceeded them," said Dr. Gerd Wolfram, Managing Director of MGI METRO Group Information Technology and responsible for the deployment of RFID within the METRO Group. "Our visitors were extremely interested in finding out more about possible applications of RFID technology. This is very encouraging and confirms that both consumers and trade visitors recognize the massive potential of RFID."
The Initiative was also able to welcome top-ranking political figures, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the Federal Minister of Justice, Brigitte Zypries. During her visit, the Chancellor emphasized the importance of RFID as an innovative solution and its high potential for the German economy.
The METRO Group is a leading international retailing company. In 2005, it generated € 55.7 billion in turnover, based on preliminary figures. The company operates in 30 countries at more than 2,100 locations and employs around 250,000 people. The performance of the METRO Group is based on the strength of its sales brands, which act independently within their respective markets: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – the worldwide market leader in self-service wholesale –, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – European market leaders in consumer electronics – as well as Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
