• Media Markt to open first stores still in 2006
• Investments of around € 650 million
• Expansion to Siberia
METRO Group continues to pursue a rapid expansion strategy in Russia. For fiscal 2006 alone the Group’s sales divisions plan opening around 15 new locations. Media Markt is set to open its first Russian stores still in this year. Plans include locations in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Metro Cash & Carry will probably open in total eight new wholesale stores in Russia in 2006 - of which six are located in cities where the company is not yet represented. Real is preparing the opening of five new hypermarkets.
"Our expansion to Russia is characterized by entrepreneurial, pioneering spirit and calculated courage. This strategy has proven to be successful: In just five years METRO Group has risen to the top of the Russian retail sector", said Dr. Hans-Joachim Körber, CEO of the METRO Group. "Furthermore, in the next five years we are also targeting ambitious goals. We want to further expand our store network in Southern and Western Russia and at the same time also quickly advance expansion into the East of the country."
In fiscal 2005, METRO Group achieved a rise in sales of around 66 percent to nearly € 1.5 billion in Russia. "We are very positive about our future business development in Russia. I am convinced that Russia can rise to the group of the top five countries in terms of sales volume and significance in the international portfolio of the METRO Group already in the medium term", stressed Dr. Körber. The number of employees working for the sales divisions in Russia has increased to now almost 10,000. The investment volume since market entry totaled around € 650 million in late 2005.
Today, the store network of the METRO Group sales divisions operating in Russia covers an area that corresponds roughly to the size of Western Europe. Accordingly, major challenges have to be mastered in the fields of logistics and procurement. The central procurement company METRO Group Buying International (MGBI) every year purchases 140,000 different products from more than 2,000 suppliers in Russia. The goods sometimes have to be transported over a distance of more than 2,500 kilometers.
METRO Group has a high demand for qualified junior staff in Russia. To continuously qualify people for a career in retailing, the METRO Group initiated the "Metro Education" project in Russia. In the context of this program METRO Group will in future support business schools in more than 14 cities. Apart from learning materials and additional teacher trainings the company is also supplying computers, among others.
