METRO Group supports the Special Olympics through Galeria Kaufhof and Real

Through its sales divisions Galeria Kaufhof and Real, the METRO Group will support the Special Olympics National Games from September 12-15, 2006 in Berlin.

Special Olympics Deutschland e. V. is the German organization of the world’s largest sports movement for mentally handicapped people. The beginning of the Special Olympics dates back to the year 1968, when Eunice Kennedy-Shriver, John F. Kennedy’s sister, initiated the first Special Olympics in Chicago. Today, Special Olympics is an international sports organization encompassing over 2.25 million mentally handicapped children, adolescents and adults. It has thus become the world’s largest sports movement for the handicapped.

This year’s National Summer Games will be organized under the patronage of German Federal President Horst Köhler who will inaugurate the games with the Olympic ceremonies on September 12, 2006 in the Max Schmeling Hall.

METRO Group, Galeria Kaufhof and Real will officially sponsor the Summer Games and contribute to the realization of this year’s National Games. Already in 2004, METRO Group supported the Summer Games in Hamburg in the framework of its social commitment scheme for vocational trainees.

35 METRO Group trainees from across Germany will travel to Berlin and contribute to making the Special Olympics a real event for the 2,726 mentally and multiply handicapped athletes. In the Olympic Town surrounding the sports facilities of Berlin’s Max Schmeling Hall, the vocational trainees will organize the meals for the athletes and their coaches.

In addition to their financial commitment, Galeria Kaufhof and Real are planning further support activities, particularly in Berlin, the venue of the games. For example, the company’s advertising brochures will draw attention to the sports competitions in order to further consolidate the Olympic spirit of these games in Berlin. The social commitment is to benefit in particular the roughly 4,500 participating athletes and their coaches. With information points and a partner lounge in the Olympic Town at Max-Schmeling Hall the companies will inform about their numerous activities in support of the handicapped.

METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2005 the group reached sales of € 55.7 billion. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 employees and operates more than 2,100 outlets in 30 countries. The operating business is performed by the sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
