Federal Competition Authority approves takeover of Wal-Mart Germany25.10.2006
Following this decision, METRO Group’s acquisition of Wal-Mart Germany can now be finalized. During the next few months, an integration team will examine how many of the 85 Wal-Mart hypermarkets acquired will be converted to the Real brand. Already now it is clear that this will be the case for the majority of the stores because they ideally complement Real’s present network of locations. The first Wal-Mart hypermarkets are to be reopened under the Real brand already before the start of the Christmas business. All hypermarkets to be integrated will be converted to Real by mid-2007.
Furthermore, the integration team will develop plans for a fast merger of the two company headquarters. The main decisions to this effect will still be taken this year.
METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2005 the group reached sales of € 55.7 billion. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 employees and operates more than 2,200 outlets in 30 countries. The operating business is performed by the sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
