METRO Group demonstrates: Retailing offers young people in Germany optimum career perspectives08.11.2006
The METRO Group will for the first time present itself as an attractive employer for university graduates and vocational trainees in the Greater Berlin area with the event series "Meeting Metro" held on November 8 and 9, 2006. With this event, which is unique in its sector, the Düsseldorf-based METRO Group, one of the leading retailing groups in the world, offers an information and communication platform around the topics of vocational training and careers in retailing. "We want to demonstrate that retailing is an exciting field of activity and offers excellent career perspectives for both, vocational trainees and university graduates", said Zygmunt Mierdorf, Executive Vice President Human Resources of METRO Group, about the purpose of the event.
Despite the dramatic situation on the market for vocational training, nearly every fourth vocational trainee drops out of the training prematurely. One of the main reasons: the expectations regarding the vocational training, on the one hand, and on the vocational trainees, on the other, do not correspond with the reality. It is therefore all the more important to ensure that teachers give the graduating students competent counseling regarding their choice of a profession. This is where the two-day event series Meeting Metro comes into play. On the first day of the event, the roughly 600 participating teachers receive a state-recognized teacher training where they learn more about vocational training and career opportunities in the retail sector. This will enable them to render their classroom teaching more practice-related and support the students better in their job choice. With Meeting Metro, the METRO Group is positioning itself as an attractive employer not only for vocational trainees but also for university graduates. On the second day of Meeting Metro, around 600 university students can inform themselves about specific job entry and career perspectives at the METRO Group.
Under the motto "Hands-on retail", the Metro sales divisions Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt and Saturn as well as Galeria Kaufhof present themselves on a 3,500 square meter boulevard. This is where the visitors can experience the manifold fields of activity that an internationally operating company like the METRO Group offers to young people. Metro employees – from the vocational trainee through to the managing director – will be available to inform visitors about the opportunities for job entries and career options. In this framework, which is unique for the retail sector and for the DAX-30 companies, the METRO Group in addition also presents its vision of the future of retailing to the participants: in the "Future Lab", visitors can get a hands-on experience of the technologies of the future for tomorrow’s retail.
METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2005 the group reached sales of € 55.7 billion. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 employees and operates more than 2,200 outlets in 30 countries. The performance capacity of the METRO Group is based on the strength of its sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe – and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
