METRO Group raises the number of newly hired vocational trainees to over 3,000

• Vocational training quota climbs to 8.9 %
• 3,005 new vocational trainees started in summer 2006
• More than 60 young people with a learning disability under the VAMB project

The METRO Group this year once again hired more than 3,000 new vocational trainees, thereby again increasing the number of job starters by a good 3 % year-on-year. At the reporting date of 30 September 2006, the training quota stood at 8.9 %. In total, more than 8,000 young people are currently engaged in a vocational training in one of the more than twenty training professions offered by the METRO Group. All companies of the METRO Group have contributed to this good result. Over-proportional increases were reported by Extra with a plus of 60 %, C & C Schaper with a plus of 43 % and by Galeria Kaufhof with a plus of 26 %. Also the consumer electronics centers of Media Markt and Saturn are reporting extraordinarily high vocational training quotas. METRO Group ranks among the largest vocational training companies in Germany thereby actively contributing to combat youth unemployment.

More than 60 young people with a learning disability completed their vocational training in the framework of the integration project VAMB (integrated vocational training of the METRO Group with the vocational education centers). In a close cooperation with the German Federal Council of Vocational Training Establishments, the Federal Employment Agency, the integration offices and the Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs, the METRO Group thus made an important contribution to the integration of disadvantaged young people.

METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2005 the group reached sales of € 55.7 billion. The company has a headcount of about 250,000 employees and operates more than 2,200 outlets in 30 countries. The performance capacity of the METRO Group is based on the strength of its sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe – and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
