Media Markt opens first stores in Russia01.12.2006
Following Metro Cash & Carry and Real, today also Media Markt opened its first stores in Moscow. The largest European consumer electronics center operator plans to quickly extend its Russian store network in the near future.
The first two Media Markt stores are located on the periphery of the Russian capital. The consumer electronics center in the Ramstore Kapitoly shopping center comprises an area of around 8,000 sqm while the outlet in the Ramstore City shopping center has an area of 4,600 sqm.
These store openings mark the beginning of a fast expansion of this sales division in Russia. Still in this year, a further store in Saint Petersburg is scheduled to open. Over the next few years, Media Markt is set to open more stores in different regions in this country.
In Russia too, Media Markt plans to offer the largest assortment of branded products at the lowest price. The stores feature huge specialized departments for TV sets, cameras, computers, telephones, HiFi as well as for all types of household appliance. Moreover, the stores offer their customers a selection of more than 15,000 CDs and DVDs.
Media Markt and Saturn operate more than 600 consumer electronics centers across Europe. Together, the two specialty center operators have a workforce of presently around 40,000 employees. Russia is the 14th country where Media Markt is active since its founding in 1979. Across Europe, Media Markt and Saturn operate outlets in Germany, Belgium, Greece, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Hungary. Expansion is to continue further: following the market entry into Russia, the first Media Markt is scheduled to open next year in Turkey. The strategic focus of Europe’s number one consumer electronics center operator lies on a further organic expansion into Europe.
METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2005 the group reached sales of € 55.7 billion. The company has a headcount of about 270,000 employees and operates about 2,300 outlets in 30 countries. The performance capacity of the METRO Group is based on the strength of its sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe – and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
