METRO Group donates € 32,800 from marathon to Tafel initiative in Düsseldorf

• METRO Group supports Tafel projects for children
• 328 employees ran for the donation

METRO Group donated € 32,800 to Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V. to support the new projects for children and youths of this relief organization in Düsseldorf. The total amount was achieved thanks to the successful performance of 328 METRO Group runners who were at the start at the METRO Group Marathon on Sunday. The retail company had offered to donate € 100 for each METRO Group runner who took on the race. "Thanks to the great athletic performance of our employees we can now give a generous donation to support the Tafel initiative in Düsseldorf in their new projects for needy children and youths", said Petra Rob, General Manager of the METRO Group.

METRO Group a long-term partner of the Tafel initiative

For many years already, METRO Group has been a special partner of Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V. In addition to regular food donations by the sales divisions the retail company also supports the relief organization financially and through volunteering by its employees in the context of special campaigns. METRO Group thus lives up to its particular social responsibility at the company’s headquarter in Düsseldorf. In addiiton, METRO Group also supports the work of Deutsche Tafel e.V. at the national level as main financial sponsor.

For twelve years, now Düsseldorfer Tafel has been regularly supplying more than 30 soup kitchens, shelters for the homeless and other social institutions in the metropolitan area with food donations. These are mainly surplus but still fresh fruit and vegetables, baking goods, dairy products, soups as well as preserves from canteen kitchens or company restaurants. The association now plans to react to the growing need for a balanced supply to children and youths in Düsseldorf with new offers in individual city districts.

METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2006 the group reached sales of about € 60 billion. The company has a headcount of some 270,000 employees and operates about 2,400 outlets in 30 countries. The operating business is performed by the sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
