METRO Group welcomes political action for nutrition and exercise

• Healthy lifestyle a key concern of society
• METRO Group sets a clear sign with the initiative 'Gut für Dich' (Good for You)

Obesity has become a general societal problem in Germany in recent years. METRO Group therefore welcomes the key point presented by the Federal Government for a national action plan to promote healthy nutrition and exercise. "This falls in line with long standing positions of the METRO Group", said Petra Rob, General Manager of the METRO Group.

In particular the holistic approach that nutrition and exercise are two sides of the same coin as well as the focus on preventive measures are very useful. "Especially children and young people have to learn early on how to keep a balanced diet and ensure sufficient physical activity. This will enable them to successfully integrate both into their daily lives also later on. Parents and teachers have to be good role models in this respect", said Mrs. Rob.

Nutrition labelling on own brand products

To support people in leading a healthy lifestyle, the METRO Group since early 2007 has been introducing a new, particularly consumer-friendly nutrion labelling system on their own brand products. "We concur with the Federal Government that producers and retailers have to offer an easy-to-understand labelling of food products", explained Mrs. Rob. "Wherever possible, this labelling should be introduced on a voluntary basis and without patronizing the consumer. METRO Group is setting a good example with its new nutrition labelling."

In addition, METRO Group as the largest German retailing company is living up to its social responsibility and has been supporting numerous exercise and nutrition projects for many years now. The METRO Group Marathon and initiatives for overweight children like "Schwer mobil" organized by the sports association of North Rhine-Westphalia are but two examples. The company also cooperates with peb, the "Plattform für Ernährung und Bewegung” [platform for nutrition and exercise] founded by the Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection.

Initiative "Gut für Dich" (Good for You) bundles activities

The company is bundling its manifold activities under the long-range initiative "Gut für Dich” (Good for You) launched this March. "We want to highlight that nutrition and exercise are inseparable for us. We give people impulses and information for a healthy lifestyle. The initiative is a clear contribution by METRO Group to the comprehensive consumer information and motivation demanded by politicians ", said Mrs. Rob.

The central platform of the initiative and the interactive information portal for all those who wish to follow a balanced diet and exercise more is the website Link to external page:www.gut-fuer-dich.info. Joachim Löw supports the initiative as a prominent partner. In a nation-wide advertising campaign, the successful coach is drawing the attention to "Gut für Dich" (Good for You) and also sets a good example by participating in events like the METRO Group Marathon. "Joachim Löw is a role model for discipline and perseverance. Together with him we want to reach as many people as possible and motivate them for a healthy lifestyle", explained Mrs. Rob.

METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2006 the group reached sales of about € 60 billion. The company has a headcount of some 270,000 employees and operates about 2,400 outlets in 30 countries. The operating business is performed by the sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
