First food charity for children launched by the Tafel initiative in Düsseldorf-Garath

• Food charity of Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V. to start in August
• METRO Group is the main sponsor of the new food charity targeting children and youths

Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V. will launch the city’s first food charity for children. The charity organization operated by volunteers will act as sponsor for the lunch of needy children at three schools in Düsseldorf-Garath. In addition, the Tafel food charity for children will offer children in need who cannot get a lunch at home a warm meal every weekday on the premises of the protestant church in Garath starting from 7 August 2007. METRO Group, Germany’s largest retail company with its registered head office in Düsseldorf, is the main sponsor.

With this new initiative, Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V. is taking action in the face of the growing need for a balanced nutrition of children and youths in Düsseldorf. "We are confident that these offers will help poor families where they need support most urgently", said Heike Vongehr, Chairwoman of Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V.. In Garath, the Tafel initiative will assume the financial sponsorship for the lunch meals in the framework of the open full-time school for a total of 30 children attending the primary schools at Neustrelitzer Straße and Adam-Stegerwald-Straße, and the Alfred-Herrhausen special school for pupils with a learning disability. Starting from August, the needy families will only have to pay a small contribution to the costs for the school lunch while the rest will be financed by the Tafel initiative.

The financial basis for the initiative was provided by METRO Group. On the occasion of the METRO Group Marathon in May the company’s employees had achieved donations totaling € 32,800 for the Düsseldorfer Tafel initiative with their athletic performance. "It is a particular concern for us to support the Tafel initiative and its activities for a balanced nutrition of school children", said Petra Rob, General Manager of the METRO Group. The project in Garath marks the start of a series of Tafel projects targeting children. "We are convinced that we will win further sponsors for the school lunches and for the long-term funding of the food charity for children", stressed Vongehr.

For those children who did not sign up for day-care at the schools and who do not receive any meal at home, a hot meal will be available at the Anne-Frank-Haus, the protestant youth center on Stettiner Straße, on weekdays starting from August. Here, the children have to pay only a symbolic charge and will in addition also be looked after.

Düsseldorf Tafel intensifying activities targeting children and youths

With the project in Garath, the Düsseldorf Tafel initiative is intensifying its activities for children and youths, which it had launched in autumn 2006 in the framework of a campaign for healthy school breakfast at three schools in Düsseldorf. This notwithstanding, the key mission of the Tafel initiative with its 50 volunteers remains the regular food supply of the more than 30 soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other social institutions within the municipal area, which it has been providing for twelve years already. The food donations mostly involve excess fruit and vegetables, bakery goods, dairy products as well as meals from company restaurants and canteen kitchens.

METRO Group a long-term partner of the Tafel initiative

METRO Group has been a special partner of Düsseldorfer Tafel e.V. for many years already. In addition to regular food donations by its sales brands, the retail group also provides financial assistance to the charity organization and also supports it by encouraging its employees to volunteer for special activities. In doing so, METRO Group lives up to its special corporate social responsibility at the company’s head quarters in Düsseldorf. Moreover, METRO Group supports the activities of the federal association of Deutsche Tafel e.V. as its main financial sponsor.
