METRO Group First German Retail Company with Clear Nutritional Labeling

• More than 2,000 private-label articles have already been changed
• Important component of the Initiative "Gut für Dich" (good for you) for nutrition and exercise

With its initiative "Gut für Dich" (good for you), the METRO Group is promoting healthy lifestyles. An important component of the initiative is new labeling that allows consumers to quickly and easily learn about the nutritional value of food. In January 2007, the METRO Group became the first German retail company to begin introducing nutritional labeling for its own private labels. Since then, more than 2,000 of the approximately 2,600 private-label articles have been changed. The switchover will conclude at the end of 2007.

The nutritional-labeling information conforms with recommendations from the CIAA (Confederation of Food and Drink Industries). Consumers can easily find three important pieces of information on the front of the labels:

  • serving size
  • number of calories per serving
  • percentage of calories based on the GDA (Guideline Daily Amount) – the recommended daily energy requirement

With this concise, easy-to-understand information on the front of the label, customers can quickly determine which foods best suit their dietary needs. A detailed list of ingredients is on the back of the label.

The METRO Group views its customers as responsible consumers who make their own dietary decisions. What makes sense for some consumers may not be suitable for others – for example, because they have different caloric needs. This is also why it does not make sense to talk about "good" and "bad" foods. It is much more important to consider how often and how much a particular product is consumed. The METRO Group’s nutritional labeling serves as an important guide for consumers making decisions about a balanced diet.
