China is a country of superlatives: it is the world’s most populous state, attracts more foreign direct investment than any other nation, and covers the largest area in East Asia. In addition to this, China is also a major global player in terms of trading volume and economic power, measured by gross domestic product. A growing number of Chinese are profiting from this boom: private consumption has risen by some 27 percent since 2002. In order to capitalize on the outstanding market opportunities available in the country, the METRO Group expanded into China back in 1996.
