METRO Group opens second bilingual company kindergarten

METRO Group today opens its second bilingual company kindergarten "Metro-Sternchen". With this move, the corporation is setting another example for the compatibility of family and career. The new daycare center for children at the group’s Düsseldorf headquarter provides another 65 kindergarten places for children aged between 4 months and 6 years so that a total of 130 places are now available.

"Given the large demand for daycare places we have decided to build a second Metro company kindergarten. As one of the largest employers in Düsseldorf, we recognize our corporate social responsibility. We would like to contribute to a more family-friendly society and help our employees achieve a better balance between their family and professional lives", said Zygmunt Mierdorf, Member of the Management Board of the METRO Group.

Of the 270,000 METRO Group employees worldwide around 5,500 work on the Düsseldorf campus. Also in future, the company does not want to do without well-trained female employees and executives. A qualified daycare system for children plays an important role in this context. "With this move we are making an important investment into the future", said Mierdorf.

Just like in the first Metro company kindergarten, the children at the second "Metro-Sternchen" will be cared for bilingually – in German and English. This way, METRO Group is doing justice to the company’s increasing internationalization: in Düsseldorf alone, people from 30 different countries work for the retail group.

The second "Metro-Sternchen" daycare center was built directly next to the first one and the outdoor facilities of the two houses were combined to give one large playground. Here, the children can choose between many activities: a giant swing, a tree house, a water pump with several retaining walls as well as numerous wooden toys are available. A "bicycle path" surrounds the complete facility.

Every last detail of the kindergartens’ architectural design is child-friendly. The use of different shades of yellow and red, the light-colored materials and the large windows make the rooms very bright and friendly. The carrier of the facility is the German Red Cross district association in Düsseldorf.

METRO Group is one of the most important international retailing companies. In 2006 the group reached sales of around € 60 billion. The company has a headcount of some 270,000 employees and operates about 2,400 outlets in 31 countries. The operating business is performed by the sales brands which operate independently in the market: Metro/Makro Cash & Carry – world market leader in cash & carry wholesale, Real hypermarkets and Extra supermarkets, Media Markt and Saturn – market leader in consumer electronics centers in Europe, and Galeria Kaufhof department stores.
